Sleepy Time Play Dough Recipe
February 26, 2016
After a few restless nights, it was time to try just about anything. I recently stumbled across an article that explained how to make homemade play dough that was both easy and edible. I use the term edible very loosely. Your child will not want to eat the play dough. It is salty and tastes like lavender. Trust me. Donovan spit out his first bite and threw the dough across the room. I had to hold back my mother’s voice, “I told you not to do that”.
Here is the 10 minute recipe.
Sleepy Time Play Dough Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tarter (I finally found a use for it – whoo hoo!)
- 1 cup water
- 8 drops of purple food coloring
- 1 1/2 tablespoons oil (any kind will do)
- 4 drops of lavender
Step 1 – In a room temperature skillet, combine the flour, cream of tarter, and salt.
Step 2 – Add the water and oil. Mix it up and turn the stove on medium low.
Step 3 – Add the food coloring. Continue to gently stir until it is 95% play dough consistency.
Step 4 – Remove from the burner and keep stirring until it is 100% play dough consistency.
Step 5 – Knead with your hands.
Step 6 – Add the lavender and knead until blended.
I made 4 snack size bags of sleepy time dough for him to play with. If you store it in the fridge, it will last longer. The pan is super easy to clean! It melts under water.
The simple act of playing and molding play dough will calm a child before bedtime. If you try the recipe, I would love to hear about it. You can share your pictures below.
